Why Some Michigan Politicians Say the Flint Water Crisis is a Hoax

Even as authorities are still advising residents in Flint, Mich., not to drink or bathe in citys tap water, leaving thousands to rely on bottled water to survive, some of the states prominent political voices think Flints water crisis may be exaggerated.

.

Foremost among them is Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson (R), who voiced skepticism about the severity of the crisis during an appearance before the Detroit Economic Club luncheon Tuesday, according to the Detroit Free Press.

.

I dont think we should say or use words anymore like Flints been poisoned, Patterson told reporters, according to Fox affiliate WJBK. Because I dont think thats accurate.

.

Ive been using words like, Flints been poisoned and I wont use that anymore because I think the jury is out, he added.

.

According to the World Health Organization, lead affects childrens brain development resulting in reduced intelligence quotient (IQ), behavioral changes such as shortening of attention span and increased antisocial behavior, and reduced educational attainment. Lead exposure also causes anemia, hypertension, renal impairment, immunotoxicity and toxicity to the reproductive organs. The neurological and behavioral effects of lead are believed to be irreversible.

.

As The Posts Yanan Wang notes: The Hurley Medical Center in Flint released a study in September that confirmed what many parents in the city had feared for more than a year: The proportion of infants and children with above-average levels of lead in their blood has nearly doubled since the city switched from the Detroit water system to using the Flint River as its water source in 2014.

.

Despite what many see as definitive evidence of a crisis, Patterson told the station he changed his mind after hearing a radio interview with Bill Ballenger, a well-known Republican political analyst, former state lawmaker and Flint resident, who said he was offering the other side of the story.

.

Lets wait and see what the facts show, Patterson urged.

.

In the interview cited by Patterson, Ballenger said his own blood tests hadnt revealed elevated levels of lead and he wondered whether the crisis was a hoax, according to the Free Press. He argued that the crisis was instead perpetuated by politicians and members of the media with an ax to grind.

.

The idea that the entire population of Flint has been poisoned and that we all have elevated blood-levels because of this is just a total canard, Ballenger told WJRs Frank Beckmann. Its just a crock, and for this to be perpetuated as a story is doing a lot of damage to Flint as a community.

China built a wall 2,000 years ago. In Beijing, they dont have any Mexicans, so its working, Patterson said to Michigan Matters host Carol Cain after she asked whether he agrees with GOP presidential nominee Donald Trumps proposal for the countrys southern border.

.

Also appearing with Patterson on Sundays program were Denise Ilitch and Michigan Chronicle Editor Keith Owens.

.

Cain asked Ilitch whether she thought Trump would apologize for past remarks about Muslim Americans, given metro Detroits sizable Arab population. Absolutely not, Ilitch said.

.

Patterson chimed in: Whats he got to apologize for? before adding: No, Im serious  with the Arab community?

.

Cain then said she was referring to the dispute between Trump and Khizr and Ghazala Khan  the parents of a Muslim American soldier who died while serving in Iraq. Patterson said: I do agree that was uncalled for.

.

Ilitch pointed out that Trump is also advocating for a wall to keep out a population of individuals, which led Patterson to make his comment referencing the Great Wall of China.

Oakland County Execute L. Brooks Patterson, who caused a controversy when he issued a November decree imploring leaders in the City of Pontiac to put a stop to a planned residential development intended, in part, to house Syrian refugees, agrees with Republican presidential nominee Donald Trumps plan to restrict immigration into the United States.

.

Appearing on a local television politics program Sunday, Jan. 3, Patterson reportedly said Trumps proposal was not a bad idea, during a segment on WWJ-TVs Michigan Matters, The longtime county leader, added the restriction should be in place while a more thorough vetting process for immigrants could be established.

Pontiac  Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson finds himself and presidential hopeful Donald Trump in the cross-hairs of a political flier from the Oakland County Democratic Party.

.

Asking Are You Embarrassed Yet? on one side and You Should Be on the other, the 6-by-11-inch red, black and white flier was sent out to an unknown number of voters this past week. Black and white photos depict a scowling Patterson and an open-mouthed Trump, accompanied by inflammatory quotes both have allegedly made over the past four years.

.

.

We think it is important for voters to keep in mind how close these two are. Brooks Patterson is insensitive to many voters and they should keep that in mind.

.

Hes the countys original Donald Trump.

.

Patterson, 77, is seeking his seventh term as the countys top elected official and traditionally has been returned to office by a wide margin. But county Democrats are again banking Patterson can be defeated. Former state representative and Farmington Hills Mayor Vicki Barnett won Augusts Democratic primary for the right to take on Patterson in the Nov. 8 general election.

.

Among them:

.

From a June 2015 New Yorker magazine interview: What were going to do is turn Detroit into a big Indian reservation, where we herd all the Indians into the city, build a fence around it, and then throw in the blankets and the corn.

.

On possible re-election from the same New Yorker piece: Ill keep getting elected until Im caught in bed with a live man or a dead woman.

.

From an August 2016 Michigan Matters appearance on building a wall between the U.S. and Mexico: China built a wall 2000 years ago. In Beijing, they dont have any Mexicans, so its working.
