Now Trump, who as Trump the Candidate said that he would repeal and replace Obamacare “immediately,” says that the real losers here are Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi. Sure they are.
.
Trump spent a year and a half banging away at Obamacare when he wasn’t talking about his wall. The Republicans in Congress obsessed about the former President’s health-care law for much longer than that. Only now, when asked for an alternative, they present something that seemed to have been scribbled on the back of a cocktail napkin.
.
After all the years when their only vision of America involved saying no to Obama, when they now have all the numbers in Washington White House, House, Senate, clean sweep they come up with a plan that makes Obama’s look like a more beautiful document than the Bill of Rights.
.
And if these people can’t do this, starting with the new President, if they can’t get health care done when they own Washington from one end to the other, what can they do before the next reckoning for all of them, in the midterm elections of 2018?
.
For now, though, we know exactly who these men are, so many of them white men, especially in the Congress: They’re the ones who got thrown down a flight of stairs on Friday, after all their years of big talk on health care.
.
If this bill had passed, of course you know the new President, who said that he and he alone could fix everything wrong in Washington, would have risked an excessive celebration penalty on the White House lawn. Only now it is Schumer’s fault, Pelosi’s fault, the Democrats’ fault; it’s the system’s fault, and the “arcane” rules about which the new President spoke on Friday. At least House Speaker Paul Ryan, when it was over, didn’t try to act as if somehow the fight had gotten stolen from him.
.
“I will not sugarcoat it. This was a disappointing day for us,” Ryan said.
.
Notice the language here, a language where arrogance holds through a defeat like this, one that probably makes the Falcons feel better about losing the Super Bowl the way they did. It was a disappointing day “for us.” Meaning, for them. But this has always been about them. It has never been about you. No reasonable person has ever suggested that Obama’s health-care law is perfect. Far from it. It does need to be revised. Premiums and deductibles are far too high, and that’s just the short list of its inherent flaws.
.
But Trump and Ryan never sold Trumpcare on its merits. No. They sold it this way: It’s ours, not his. Not Obama’s. And so it must be better. And when Trump still thought he could sell it, even as the whole thing was collapsing on itself over the past several days, he sent out this smug clerk like Mick Mulvaney, his director of the Office of Management and Budget.
.
When Mulvaney was asked by Alex Wagner on CBS about women needing insurance for maternity leave he said, “You can figure out a way to change the state that you live in.” Your problem, not his. Mulvaney: A guy who always looks as if he is on his way to lunch at his club, and can’t be bothered talking about these women and their silly insurance problems.
